TREATMENT: Clinical/ Remedial Massage

What is Clinical/ Remedial Massage?

This treatment incorporates the Jing Method™ of Advanced Clinical Massage. A professional & compassionate line of care with the philosophy to tailor each treatment to your specific needs & preferences. This massage can be for relaxation and /or relief from chronic muscle tension & soft tissue discomfort.

Using a cleverly curated diverse blend of Eastern & Western creative & advanced bodywork modalities found in Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Therapeutic Massage and Sports Massage. A clinical/ remedial massage therapist has advanced anatomy & physiology training, that covers muscle, tendons, fascia & ligaments of the body, as well as lots of the pathologies that can effect them. With this applied knowledge and a consultation, the time will be spent focusing on the areas that need it, while also restoring some overall harmony.

Helping you reconnect & tune in with your body in both an informed and holistic way.

Your first appointment?

A skilled bodyworker offers more than just a listening ear, they provide a listening touch that will help you to reconnect with your body. Understanding that each individual is unique, I go beyond simply asking about your preferred pressure. I want to understand your needs on a more personal level.

Your initial/ first session begins with a full assessment & consultation, where we discuss your goals & preferences. It could be to reduce pain, improve mobility, to reduce stress or simply to relax. I'll ask a bit around your daily activities, health history and how your discomfort/ pain is impacting on you and other aspects of your life. This collaborative approach helps us create a clear vision of what we aim to achieve. This practice incorporates the biopsychosocial model to ensure this holistic approach to your care. (Scroll down if you want to learn a bit more on this). The session includes a range of movement assessment and, when clinically necessary, specialised orthopaedic tests. This evaluation enables me to design a treatment plan that is tailored specifically to you. The consultation & assessment process also establishes some baseline markers or benchmarks, for example, a pain scale number from at it's worst, at the start and the end of each session. We can clearly track progress this way.

What to expect in treatment?

In treatment, I will use a little unscented Vegan nut-free massage wax. Using massage wax, not oil, enables me to sink more precisely into the right spots of your muscles, also creating more traction and warmth into the more superficial layers of muscle, which in turn aid in the release of those tricky tight areas in the muscle tissue.

Treatment will involve variations of lying on your front, side and back in most treatments. During treatment, if we encounter a tender spot, we'll use an agreed upon method of communication to ensure your comfort. This could be during massage if I hit on a tender spot which is most likely a trigger point. This is were pressure can be adjusted to the right level to suit you, allowing us to wait and hold until we feel a release or change in the soft tissue. This line of communication is so beneficial and a big part of forming a better understanding of your body. Not all triggers points are palpably obvious to the therapist as they may be on a deeper layer of muscle, so client communication will aid in the best treatment outcomes for you.

At the end of each treatment we will finish off with some self care ideas to incorporate into your wellness practice, aiming on a daily basis. We'll be aiming at something personal, specific and achievable to you.

The treatment is a therapeutic alliance between therapist and client. It is a safe and inclusive space.

How often should I get massaged?

Just like learning something new, we often have to repeat things and need a little patience with ourselves to see real improvements. The first/ initial treatment will bring awareness into your body. Our muscles and nervous system like repetition. Ideally and if you'd like to see real results, it is recommended and clinically proven that regular massage treatments are received, following your initial treatment. You will feel and see more results within the first 3 sessions on a weekly basis, with an even greater improvement in session 4, 5 and 6 on a fortnightly basis. A reassessment is generally done on the forth treatment to assess improvements and make any adjustments within the course treatment. Monthly maintenance massages would be most ideal following these 1-6 treatments. Of course the frequency you can book can depend on lots of things from finances to time restraints, and this is just a recommended guideline.

Pain Relief

In the field of massage therapy, our pain can be felt in may ways: aching, cramping, hot and cold, burning, electric, shooting, nagging, intense, deep, niggling, restrictive, tingle, constant, in specific areas. Whatever you may resonate with, massage can decrease it. When a massage therapist applies pressure to the skin and muscle, this stimulates specific receptors that signals to the brain. This releases endorphins, which improve mood and reduce the perception of pain.

Stress Relief

Massage therapy calms us both physically & psychologically via our nervous system. Massage activates our parasympathetic nervous system to release those much needed neurotransmitters known as serotonin and dopamine, that play important roles in mood regulation and stress relief by promoting feelings of happiness and well being.

Improved Mobility

The massage techniques used, like stretching and kneading, can lengthen tight or contracted muscles, making them more pliable and improving range of motion. It could be some scar tissue formation from old injuries or surgeries that is restricting movement within the soft tissues. Massage helps to break down adhesions in the scar tissue, which in turn enhances mobility in the affected area. It could also be held tension in the muscle causing a lack of mobility. Massage will aid in relaxing of the muscle tissue, by aiding the nervous system and leading to better proprioception and less guarded movement. The fascia has a big role to play in movement. Myofascial release techniques will aid areas of stiff and restricted mobility, freeing up joints and movement. The goal being to restore more of your body's natural movement, flexibility and function.

Improved Brain Health

Massage therapy can complement other therapies for enhancing overall brain health. Through reduced stress and anxeity, massage lowers your stress hormone Cortisol, while increasing the production serotonin and dopamine, which are neurotransmitters that promote relaxation and improve mood. Chronic stress and anxiety are known to negatively impact brain function, so reducing these can benefit cognitive health. Massage therapy can improve sleep quality, which is crucial for brain health, aiding in memory, boosting the chemical that helps in neuroplasticity and detoxification of the brain from metabolic waste.

Benefits Of Massage...

What is the biopsychosocial model?

Instead of focusing only on the physical body, this model sees your health as a result of all three areas working together. It helps us treat the "whole person" rather than just one part of the problem.

  • Biological factors: these are physical and genetic aspects of health, like genes, infections, or injuries.

  • Psychological factors: these include mental and emotional aspects, like thoughts, feelings, stress, or coping skills.

  • Social factors: these involve relationships, cultural influences, and the environment, like family support, work, or community.
